Choo Choo Charles contains everything you need for a good horror game.

Living Spider train – check

Spooky sounds to alert you said spider train is close – check

Atmosphere – check

If you love trains, but hate spiders, this game will both draw you in and repel you. You are stuck on an island, but you have your trusty train to get around. There are missions to go on and scrap to collect. Get enough scrap, and you can upgrade your train.

Then you hear that sound and your heartbeat jumps up a couple notches. push that lever and get this train rolling. And if Choo Choo Charles attacks, you’ve got a weapon attached to the back to try and fend him off. You can upgrade and change the weapon, but your best bet is to run. That is, if you’ve upgraded your speed and are fast enough.

Overall I like this game. If you’re one of those people that complain that the graphics don’t look like a high resolution photo, this may not be the game for you. I think the graphics are fine and had no problem with them. The weirdest part was that when people talked, their lips don’t move. Now this game was made by 1 guy – so this isn’t a deal breaker for me at all. Of course, if it was a $60 game I’d be bitching about it.

The game isn’t overly complicated. Most missions are a matter of go here, grab this, take it here. And scrap is easy to find. There is a mission that is an homage to Slenderman, but this is one of the things that irritated me. First, you have to run around in this area looking for pages with the knock-off Slenderman in hot pursuit. Too often, I’d see a page but couldn’t get lined up to grab it before Slenderman got me and sent me out of the area. It just became a repetitive bit of run around and hope I find a page that I can get before being sent out to try again.

The other thing is how hard it is to defeat Charles. For most of the game, I just set the train to full speed and shot at him until he derailed me. The upgrades may have helped, but didn’t seem like much. It would reset and I could continue without seeing Charles for a bit.

Not the most in depth game or difficult puzzles, but I think the developer did a great job. The main thing is the game is fun and has a spooky vibe going on. The atmosphere alone kept me playing.
